Planned and Produced by GEEK PICTURES, the Film Teki Cometh, Wins the “Best Japanese Film” Award in the Film Category at the 80th Mainichi Film Awards

Teki Cometh, (2025), planned and produced by our producer Yuji Ozawa, and produced by GEEK SITE as the production company, has won the “Best Japanese Film” award in the Film Category—equivalent to the top prize for Best Picture—at the 80th Mainichi Film Awards.

The Mainichi Film Awards, established in 1946 and jointly organized by The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. and Sports Nippon Newspapers Co., Ltd., are one of Japan’s most prestigious and long-standing film awards.
In addition to performance and Best Picture honors, the awards recognize outstanding achievements across a wide range of categories including cinematography, art direction, and sound recording, with the aim of supporting and promoting the development of Japanese cinema.

The winners are selected by a panel of approximately 80 professionals, including leading film critics, journalists, and specialists actively working in the field.
Past award-winning titles include Shoplifters (2018) directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, Drive My Car (2021) directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, and All the Long Nights (2024) directed by Sho Miyake.

Teki Cometh, which received this year’s “Best Japanese Film” award, is a black-and-white feature that portrays how the quiet and carefully structured life of a former university professor—who has been living alone since the passing of his wife—is suddenly disrupted after receiving unsettling messages that completely alter his everyday world.
The film is based on the novel of the same title by Yasutaka Tsutsui, directed by Daihachi Yoshida (The Kirishima Thing, 2012; Fake Teeth, 2021), and stars Kyozo Nagatsuka.

The winning film was selected by five jurors from a shortlist of five nominated works.
Among the other nominated titles were notable and highly anticipated films including “I’m Kirishima,” Kokuhou, Treasure Island, and Two Seasons, Two Strangers, making this award an especially significant achievement.
