We are pleased to announce that Daihachi Yoshida, who directed “Teki Cometh,” a film planned and produced by Geek Pictures, won the “Best Director” award at the 18th Asia Film Awards, the Asia-wide version of the Academy Awards.
The Asian Film Awards (AFA), established in 2007 to promote the Asian film industry, is also known as “Asia's version of the Academy Awards” and has received numerous awards, including “Shoplifters” (18) directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, “Parasite” (19) directed by Pon Joon-ho, “Wife of a Spy” (20) directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, “Drive My Car” (21) and “Evil Does Not Exist” (23), both directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
And on March 16, 2025 (Sunday), the 18th AFA award ceremony was held, and Daihachi Yoshida won the “Best Director Award” for the film “Teki Cometh,” which was planned and produced by our company. This is the third consecutive year that a Japanese director has won the award, following Hirokazu Kore-eda's awards the year before last and the year before last.
Director Yoshida said, “It was a most blessed experience for me as a director to have the good fortune of adapting a novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui, which I have loved reading since I was young, and to work on it with such a reliable crew and wonderful actors. And to receive such a wonderful award on top of that, I couldn't be more pleased.
This film adaptation of Yasutaka Tsutsui's novel of the same title was planned and produced by our producer Yuji Ozawa and produced by our group company Geek Site. The film was completed after five years of planning and production with director Yoshida, who has worked on numerous films including “The Kirishima Thing” (12) and “Kiba: The Fangs of Fiction” (21).
The AFA award comes amidst high acclaim for the film, which won the highest award in the Competition section, the Tokyo Grand Prix/Governor of Tokyo Award, at last year's Tokyo International Film Festival, the first time in 19 years that the film has won three awards.
